đź‘´ Part 2: A Boomer who cannot get high

Dad found some product, but he is impervious to cannabis

Last week, I asked my dad to shop for cannabis for our entertainment (and education). Loyal readers will recall his experience, which was a very-thorough and slightly-disjointed foray into online cannabis shopping. He ended up on retailer sites, brand sites, marketplaces, educational articles - you name it.

It’s time to see what he ended up with, and what kind of experience he had.

(Spoiler alert: he has a randomly high THC tolerance, so this experience may require a part 3. )

🏆 Geoffrey finds some herb

A day after his initial searching, I received this message from my dad (important stuff in bold):

Hello, my son.

Success! After my many attempts yesterday, I was determined to get my hands on that Mary Jane today! So, I took the leap and set up an account on the WeedMaps site on my phone. Then I used the site to first search for the product I wanted - something low-carb/keto. I was offered a list of dispensaries, the closest being in Simi (15 miles away), and none of them saying they would deliver.

But then an ad popped up for Grassdoor, which I suspect is some kind of remote dispensary - it said “only delivery” and said it would deliver to Thousand Oaks. I looked through the menu, and it had some gummies (Plus brand) that are apparently designed to help sleep - a mix of THC, CBD, and CBN, but heavier on the THC.

đź’ˇ Quick departure: Geoffrey opted to create an account on WM, which is a good sign for listing services everywhere. He also couldn’t really find a retailer that would accommodate his preferred fulfillment method (delivery), until an ad for Grassdoor, a popular delivery service in Southern California, popped up.

The ad worked.

So, I started the order process. The process was similar to my last 2 attempts - confirming my age, uploading a screenshot of my drivers license, etc. Except for this one, I got a text/chat message asking me for a selfie. I obliged, and received a message that my order was being prepared and that a driver would be arriving within about 20 minutes. And sure enough, about 20 minutes later I was showing my id and being handed my product.

Ultimately, Geoffrey found an aggregator (WM), and was struggling to find an order flow that would suit his parameters - until he was delivered an ad at the appropriate time. The ad was for a service that could deliver to his doorstep, so he took the plunge.

⚖️ The 4 P’s of the Cannabis Consumer

You’ll recall that Geoffrey’s original goal was to find something low-carb, which he couldn’t quite accomplish, and it made me consider the trade-off’s that we all make throughout the shopping journey.

As such, I humbly present The 4 P’s of the Cannabis Consumer:

We all balance these four categories against one another, and maximize the most important ones. For example:

Product: Geoffrey wanted edibles (non-negotiable), but he was flexible on the specific product.

Price: Geoffrey didn’t mention price once; it wasn’t a consideration.

Place: How you get your product - delivery, in-store, curbside. Geoffrey really wanted delivery.

Process: Customer service, basically - or how the retailer takes care of you, whether in-store or via delivery. Geoffrey didn’t necessarily need the chat support or a nice driver - he was definitely complimentary of his experience, but it wasn’t an initial factor in his decision to order.

A single category is often important enough to sway a consumer’s decision - in this case, Place (“I must have it delivered”) won.

🤨 He couldn’t get high

This is the best part of the story - the week after he got his delivery, I received the following message:

Not much excitement to report. I finally tried the product that I successfully purchased last week - PLUS Sleep Cloudberry gummies, which I purchased from Grassdoor via Weedmaps.

At your suggestion, I took half the normal gummy, which contained 2.5mg THC, 0.5mg CBN and 0.5mg CBD. I took it about an hour before going to bed. During the last 10 or 15 minutes I started feeling sleepy, but no other symptoms, strange or otherwise.

I fell asleep pretty fast - konked right out, really.

Bottom line: I’m sure the cannabis helped relax me, and I imagine it’s responsible for my quick return to slumber after I woke up in the middle of the night. But I didn’t feel anything particularly interesting or different.

I think I might just have to take the full 5mg!

I’ll continue to experiment.

So, 2.5mg didn’t do anything.

Then, this:

So, Monday night I took a whole gummy (PLUS Sleep Cloudberry), which according to the package contains 5mg THC, 1mg CBN and 1mg CBD. Interestingly, I didn’t feel anything before going to bed - and I stayed up a full 90 minutes before retiring just to feel what I might feel. I didn’t even get as tired as the night before. Once I was in bed, I didn’t notice any particular sensations. I did fall asleep pretty quickly, and I fell back asleep very quickly after getting up in the middle of the night (which I’m convinced is due to the gummy). But otherwise, nada. And I woke early to go workout, with no lingering fatigue.

Very uneventful. Perhaps I have natural resistance. Or perhaps I need something with equal parts THC and CBD.

Beats me.

The good news, though - no adverse effects as all.

Love you, my son. Perhaps I’ll experiment with 2 sometime this weekend.
